The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() Sensitive, moving and shocking-and containing in George Orr one of SF’s greatest characters, The Lathe of Heaven will stay in your mind long after you’ve put it down. ![]() “Whichever way you approach it, this book is wonderful. The story can be enjoyed as a struggle between a man and his therapist to ‘make a breakthrough,’ as a SF parable about the dangers of becoming a God, or simply as a page turner, full of twists and shocks. “ The Lathe of Heaven is a psychological thriller in every sense of the term. The author has produced a rare and powerful synthesis of poetry and science, reason and emotion.” ![]() “Le Guin brings reality itself to the proving ground. “Le Guin neatly and eerily conveys the bad-dream civilization which is George’s everyday world.” What if one really could create one’s own reality, the book asks? What kind of hell would that be? What kind of insanity would it bring on?” “In The Lathe of Heaven she summons the city itself, spinning a tale of a Portland man whose dreams shape reality, and the psychedelic consequences that result when that power is exploited by a nefarious doctor. Only a great work of literature can bridge-so thrillingly-that impossible span.” When I read it, more than 25 years later, it breaks my heart. “When I read The Lathe of Heaven as a young man, my mind was boggled. ![]() Lynsay sands hunting for a highlander6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() I came across this audiobook while searching for Joel Froomkin narrations, and I went into it without any expectations, being my first Highlander romance. The physical tension between the two simmers throughout this book, and they are explosive together, often making me catch my breath. The chemistry and emotional connection between Aulay and Jetta was palpable, investing the reader in this uncommon relationship. The humor in this book was a pleasant surprise and made me love this family even more. I sighed and swooned, I blushed and laughed out loud. I experienced a full spectrum of emotions while listening to this book. While my initial reaction to him was a little lukewarm, he quickly won me over and stole my heart. ![]() Aulay was a perfect hero for me, a protective male who also isn’t afraid to be vulnerable. The Highlander’s Promise was an entertaining and lighthearted read, one that held me captive from the very start, and one that continues to have a hold on me even after finishing Aulay and Jetta’s story. I wasn’t sure what to expect from my first Highlander romance, but this book has set the bar way high, so other books in the genre better watch their backs! I am a recent convert to historical romance novels, and The Highlander’s Promise by Lynsay Sands is now ranked among my favorites. ![]() Bridal favors by connie brockway6/26/2023 ![]() And did Miss Bates mention the laugh-out-loud moments … Though it may be deemed a light read, frothy and fun, there were also lovely, poignant moments, moments of pain in the characters, whose effervescent mood and carryings-on, embracing of life, willingness to forgive wrong-doing, were endearing. The distancing was still there, but it was gentler. The voice was captivating, droll, affectionate towards its hero and heroine’s youthful foibles. The novel was charming and funny, and pulled at the heartstrings. Surprise, surprise … Brockway’s latest won her over. ![]() When The Songbird’s Seduction came along … well, there was a mitigating factor, the Edwardian setting. Miss Bates suspects that there was something about Brockway’s voice, a privileging of it, a bringing into the forefront of the narrative that made the reader too conscious of it. She read All Through the Night and liked it better, but wasn’t inspired to read more of the oeuvre. She read rav-y reviews about As You Desire, dutifully read it, and it left her cold. ![]() Miss Bates will expose her uncouth romance-reading ways and admit she’s not keen on Brockway’s books. ![]() Emeraldalicious6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I do appreciate the intended message about trying to undo the damage we have done to the environment, but the story simply didn't work. The artwork is flat and uninteresting, the story poorly thought out, and the heroine obnoxious. The fifth book in author/artist Victoria Kann's best-selling picture-book series about Pinkalicious and her adventures, Emeraldalicious is a thoroughly unappealing book, and (much like its predecessors) had me at a loss to understand its popularity. Undaunted, they use the magic wand that Pinkalicious has just discovered, as well as some rhyming enchantments, to transform the trash and the garden, making everything "Emeraldalicious." When Pinkalicious and her brother Peter go walking in their favorite park, they discover that someone has turned it into a trash dump. ![]() Pack of Lies by Lucy Felthouse6/26/2023 ![]() ![]() But can Cade-and his wolf-win over the campaign manager?
